Correspondence problems like optic flow belong to the fundamental problems in computer vision. Here, one aims at finding correspondences between the pixels in two (or more) images. The correspondences are described by a displacement vector field that is often found by minimising an energy (cost) function. In this thesis, we present several contributions to the energy-based solution of correspondence problems: (i) We start by developing a robust data term with a high degree of invariance under illumination changes. Then, we design an anisotropic smoothness term that works complementary to the data term, thereby avoiding undesirable interference. Additionally, we propose a simple method for determining the optimal balance between the two terms. (ii) When discretising image derivatives that occur in our continuous models, we show that adapting one-sided upwind discretisations from the field of hyperbolic differential equations can be beneficial. To ensure a fast solution of the nonlinear system of equations that arises when minimising the energy, we use the recent fast explicit diffusion (FED) solver in an explicit gradient descent scheme. (iii) Finally, we present a novel application of modern optic flow methods where we align exposure series used in high dynamic range (HDR) imaging. Furthermore, we show how the alignment information can be used in a joint super-resolution and HDR method.

Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

BACKGROUND: Elevated serum concentration of interleukin (IL)-6 is a predictor for poor prognosis in congestive heart failure. It was shown previously in rats, that IL-6 expression in the left ventricle (LV) was followed by LV hypertrophy. METHODS: Using IL-6 deficient mice (IL-6(-/-)), we studied the role of IL-6 in a model of norepinephrine (NE)-induced LV hypertrophy. RESULTS: In wild type (WT) mice, IL-6 mRNA expression and its concentration in the serum were elevated after 4 h of NE-treatment (s.c. 0.25 mg.h)./kg Further, NE-induced LV hypertrophy was detected: LV weight/body weight (LVW/BW) ratio (+12.3+/-3%, p < 0.05) and mRNA expression of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in WT mice (+120+/-25%, p < 0.05) after 3 days were increased. In contrast, NE did not induce elevation of LVW/BW ratio and ANP expression in IL-6(-/-) mice. Replacement with recombinant IL-6 restored the hypertrophy-inducing effect of NE in IL-6(-/-) mice. As to the extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, NE increased collagen type I and III expression only in WT mice and not in IL-6(-/-) mice. The addition of recombinant IL-6 elevated the expression of the ECM proteins to the WT level. CONCLUSION: IL-6 is a major player in the development of NE-induced LV hypertrophy in mice

The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2017 (IDP2017) is the second publicly available data product of the international GEOTRACES programme, and contains data measured and quality controlled before the end of 2016. The IDP2017 includes data from the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Southern and Indian oceans, with about twice the data volume of the previous IDP2014. For the first time, the IDP2017 contains data for a large suite of biogeochemical parameters as well as aerosol and rain data characterising atmospheric trace element and isotope (TEI) sources. The TEI data in the IDP2017 are quality controlled by careful assessment of intercalibration results and multi-laboratory data comparisons at crossover stations. The IDP2017 consists of two parts: (1) a compilation of digital data for more than 450 TEIs as well as standard hydrographic parameters, and (2) the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas providing an on-line atlas that includes more than 590 section plots and 130 animated 3D scenes. The digital data are provided in several formats, including ASCII, Excel spreadsheet, netCDF, and Ocean Data View collection. Users can download the full data packages or make their own custom selections with a new on-line data extraction service. In addition to the actual data values, the IDP2017 also contains data quality flags and 1-σ data error values where available. Quality flags and error values are useful for data filtering and for statistical analysis. Metadata about data originators, analytical methods and original publications related to the data are linked in an easily accessible way. The eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas is the visual representation of the IDP2017 as section plots and rotating 3D scenes. The basin-wide 3D scenes combine data from many cruises and provide quick overviews of large-scale tracer distributions. These 3D scenes provide geographical and bathymetric context that is crucial for the interpretation and assessment of tracer plumes near ocean margins or along ridges. The IDP2017 is the result of a truly international effort involving 326 researchers from 25 countries. This publication provides the critical reference for unpublished data, as well as for studies that make use of a large cross-section of data from the IDP2017. This article is part of a special issue entitled: Conway GEOTRACES - edited by Tim M. Conway, Tristan Horner, Yves Plancherel, and Aridane G. González

AUTOtech.agil: architecture and technologies for orchestrating automotive agility

Future mobility will be electrified, connected and automated. This opens completely new possibilities for mobility concepts that have the chance to improve not only the quality of life but also road safety for everyone. To achieve this, a transformation of the transportation system as we know it today is necessary. The UNICARagil project, which ran from 2018 to 2023, has produced architectures for driverless vehicles that were demonstrated in four full-scale automated vehicle prototypes for different applications. The AUTOtech.agil project builds upon these results and extends the system boundaries from the vehicles to include the whole intelligent transport system (ITS) comprising, e.g., roadside units, coordinating instances and cloud backends. The consortium was extended mainly by industry partners, including OEMs and tier 1 suppliers with the goal to synchronize the concepts developed in the university-driven UNICARagil project with the automotive industry. Three significant use cases of future mobility motivate the consortium to develop a vision for a Cooperative Intelligent Transport System (C-ITS), in which entities are highly connected and continually learning. The proposed software ecosystem is the foundation for the complex software engineering task that is required to realize such a system. Embedded in this ecosystem, a modular kit of robust service-oriented modules along the effect chain of vehicle automation as well as cooperative and collective functions are developed. The modules shall be deployed in a service-oriented E/E platform. In AUTOtech.agil, standardized interfaces and development tools for such platforms are developed. Additionally, the project focuses on continuous uncertainty consideration expressed as quality vectors. A consistent safety and security concept shall pave the way for the homologation of the researched ITS
